Overview
BIS, as the National Standard Body of India, was founded under the BIS Act of 2016 with the aim of fostering the coordinated advancement of standardization, labeling, and quality assurance for goods, alongside related matters. Through its activities, BIS has consistently contributed to the Indian economy by offering traceability and tangible advantages in various ways. These include ensuring the availability of safe and reliable goods, reducing health risks for consumers, encouraging the substitution of imports and exports, and regulating the proliferation of product varieties. This is achieved through the rigorous processes of standardization, certification, and testing.
Types Of BIS Certification
The Indian Standards of Institute (ISI) certification scheme, administered by the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS), guarantees that a product meets safety and reliability standards for end consumers, ensuring compliance with Indian safety regulations. With a scope covering more than 20,000 products, over 600 of these necessitate a mandatory ISI mark for entry into the Indian market. Simply put, without ISI certification, a product cannot be legally sold or distributed in India.
The BIS Foreign Manufacturer Certification Scheme (FMCS) is an initiative launched by the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) to verify that specific imported goods adhere to Indian quality standards. The FMCS certification scheme applies to manufacturers whose production facilities are situated outside India.
The BIS CRS, or Compulsory Registration Scheme, is a regulatory framework established by the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) to ensure that certain electronic and IT products meet prescribed safety and quality standards before they are made available in the Indian market.
The BIS hallmarking system is a quality assurance scheme implemented by the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) to ensure the purity and quality of precious metals like gold and silver. The primary objective of BIS hallmarking is to protect consumers from counterfeit or substandard jewelry and to promote consumer trust by guaranteeing the purity of precious metals.
Advantages of BIS
Enhanced Product Quality : Products bearing the ISI mark are associated with superior quality, ensuring customers receive reliable and safe goods.
Efficient Resource Utilization : Compliance with ISI standards minimizes wastage of resources like raw materials and labor, leading to more efficient production processes.
Decreased Rejections and Losses : Adherence to ISI standards reduces the likelihood of product rejections and associated losses, promoting cost-effectiveness in manufacturing.
Improved Customer Satisfaction : The ISI mark instills confidence in consumers, leading to higher satisfaction levels, which in turn can create better business opportunities and customer loyalty.
Assurance of Quality and Safety : The presence of the ISI mark provides assurance of both quality and safety standards, enhancing trust between manufacturers and consumers.
