To export specified products to India, manufacturers need either BIS registration (under the Compulsory Registration Scheme – CRS) or BIS certification (under the Foreign Manufacturers Certification Scheme – FMCS). This BIS certification, issued by the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) with a unique registration number, is mandatory for these products to be introduced and sold in the Indian market, ensuring they meet Indian Standards (IS) for reliability, safety, and quality.

What is CRS ?

In India, the BIS-Compulsory Registration Scheme (BIS-CRS), managed by the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS), mandates that manufacturers of specified electronic and IT products obtain registration certificates from BIS before they can manufacture or import those products for sale in the Indian market. This scheme assures consumers about the quality and safety of those products.

The Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY) upheld the recent CSR for electronics and IT products, which covers 76 product categories. Manufacturers, importers, distributors, and sellers of products falling under this scheme should secure BIS CRS Registration.

Therefore, manufacturers producing electronics and IT products must first have their products tested in BIS recognized laboratories, and only then apply for registration. After successful registration, the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) allows them to declare conformity to Indian Standards and allows the use of the Standard Mark on their products.

BIS CRS registration process

Submit a sample for testing to a BIS-recognized laboratory.

Duration of BIS CRS Registration

The BIS compulsory registration scheme registration is not granted once for all time. It is valid for a fixed period of two years thereafter, and renewal is mandatory for maintaining compliance. The most important criterion for renewal is that neither the product nor the relevant standard should have changed beyond limits. In case there have been such changes, you will have to apply for registration again, which may also involve updated testing and documentation.
