Why CRS is mandatory

India mandates that certain electronic products be registered with the Bureau of Indian Standards under the Compulsory Registration Scheme. This certification is not optional. Even if your product is made outside India, it needs CRS Certification to be sold in the Indian market, and it must meet the applicable Indian Standards before sale.

Registration is filed online through the BIS portal. The path runs from identifying the standard to grant of the certificate.

Prepare and test

Register on the BIS online portal and prepare product details, manufacturing license, factory layout and quality system documents.
Product testing
Send product samples to a BIS-recognized lab in India. Testing is carried out as per the relevant IS standard and the lab issues a test report.

Submit and grant

Submit to BIS
File the application with test reports and documents through the BIS portal and pay the application and processing fees.
Scrutiny by BIS
BIS evaluates the test reports, documents and factory details, and may request clarifications.
Grant of certificate
On successful verification, BIS grants the Registration Certificate and you may use the Standard Mark with the R-number on your products.

Lifecycle

Validity & renewal

CRS Certification is valid for 2 years from the date of registration.
Apply for renewal at least 30 days before expiry.
On renewal, validity can be extended for another 2 to 5 years, subject to BIS approval.
No retesting is required if the product remains unchanged and complies with the same standards.
