The Legal Metrology Act, 2009 states that any packaged goods sold or distributed within the country, or exported, must obtain a Legal Metrology Certification from the Metrology Department in the Ministry of Consumer Affairs. The earliest standard system of measurements in India traces back to the Harappan civilisation. The Standards of Weights and Measures Act was passed by Parliament in December 1956 and came into effect on 1 October 1985, and the framework is now governed by the Legal Metrology Act, 2009.
