The WPC Import License is a compulsory approval from the Wireless Planning & Coordination (WPC) Wing of the Ministry of Communications in India for importing wireless/Bluetooth products such as Wi-Fi routers, Bluetooth speakers, drones, RFID products, smart wearable devices, etc. Even if the product has an ETA (Equipment Type Approval), you will not be able to import it commercially without a valid WPC Certificate for Import since Customs would not authorize it.

What is a WPC Import License ?

The WPC Import License is a formal authorization given by the Wireless Planning and Coordination Wing (WPC) under the Ministry of Communications, Government of India.

It is a requirement when importing wireless, Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, and RF-enabled devices into India, including but not limited to routers, Bluetooth speakers, smart watches, RFID devices, drones, and others.

Even if you have already received an ETA (Equipment Type Approval), you still cannot clear shipments at Indian customs without it.

In other words:

  • ETA License = Indicates that the product has been approved for Indian frequency
  • WPC Import License = allows for the legal importation of that approved product in India.

  • Importer’s License –  WPC gives importer licenses to companies importing wireless devices to India to have the right to sell them.
  • ETA( Equipment type approval) – Every equipment that is operating in de-licensed frequencies requires Equipment Type Approval (ETA) from the Wireless Planning and Coordination (WPC) Wing irrespective of whether it is an imported or locally manufactured device like any other wireless device. This includes examples such as RFID, mobile phones, Wi-Fi-enabled devices, and Bluetooth devices.
  • Network License – All support organizations indeed need to obtain a network license from the Government of India to offer communication services like a mobile network, cable or DTH, over the limited radio frequency spectrum available in India.

Not all electronic equipment requires WPC approval, but every device that uses RF, Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, or wireless communication requires WPC Import License. This is to ensure that the device will not interfere with India’s allocated frequency spectrum.

  • Online Application: Normally, the WPC import license application is sought through the Saral Sanchar website.
  • Registration on Saral Sanchar Portal: Create the account in the Saral Sanchar portals if not already created. 
  • Fill the Online Form: Online Application form and fill it out carefully with accurate information Enter the  appropriate license category.
  • Upload Documents: Upload all required documents in the prescribed format. Ensure that the documents are clear and legible.
  • Pay the Fees: Pay the online application fees applicable. These charges vary for different types of equipment and licenses.
  • Submit the Application: Once you have filled out the form, uploaded the documents, and paid the fees, then you submit your application.
  • Application Tracking: You can track your application online through the Saral Sanchar portal.
