Who needs CRS Certification?

Any manufacturer, either Indian or foreign, needs to obtain the certificate before offering its products for sale or import, or otherwise distributing the same in the Indian market, if the product is mentioned under the CRS scheme.

CRS covers 76+ categories of electronic and IT products including LED lights, mobile phones, laptops, power banks, adapters, televisions, printers, and much more, with the list being an ever-evolving one by MeitY and BIS.

Can foreign manufacturers apply for CRS Certification?

Yes, foreign manufacturers must appoint an Authorized Indian Representative (AIR) to apply for CRS Certification on their behalf.

What is the validity of the CRS Certificate?

The CRS Certificate is valid for 2 years and may be renewed for a retainment up to 5 years, as long as there are no changes to product design or applicable standards.

Must a product be tested for CRS?

Yes, all products are to be tested in a BIS-recognized laboratory within India prior to registration.

Can a certificate apply to several products or brands?

No. A CRS certificate must be obtained for each product, brand, and manufacturing facility.

What happens if I sell a product without CRS Certification?

Selling without valid CRS Certification is illegal and can attract penalties or product recall, or banning of import/sale in India.

What is the time duration to obtain CRS Certification?

On average, time taken is around 4-6 weeks, depending on the timeline for product testing and the accuracy of documentation.

Who regulates the CRS Certification?

The CRS Certifications are regulated by the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) under the Ministry of Electronics and IT (MeitY).

Has BIS introduced QR code labeling for CRS products in 2025?

Yes, as of 2025, BIS has proposed QR code-based labeling for CRS-certified products. This allows easy consumer verification of registration numbers, improving transparency and traceability. Implementation may be phased for select categories.

Is e-waste compliance linked to CRS Certification now?

Yes, BIS now encourages manufacturers applying for CRS Certification to also comply with e-waste and RoHS regulations under E-Waste (Management) Rules 2022, which became stricter in 2025. This will be linked in future CRS evaluations for certain product categories like mobile phones and batteries.

Can one AIR (Authorized Indian Representative) manage multiple brands in 2025?

Yes, one AIR can now represent multiple foreign manufacturers, but separate authorization letters and documentation must be submitted for each brand/product. BIS has clarified this in its recent circular to ease global compliance.
