BIS Hallmarking Registration is the official authorisation that allows a jeweller to sell gold and silver articles bearing the BIS Hallmark. A hallmark is a guarantee of purity, certifying that the precious-metal content of an article conforms to the relevant Indian Standard. Without this registration, a jeweller cannot legally stamp, stock or sell hallmarked jewellery.

The scheme is administered by the Bureau of Indian Standards under the BIS Act, 2016 and the rules and regulations made under it. The registration is granted to the seller, while the actual hallmarking is done at a BIS-recognised Assaying and Hallmarking Centre. Together, registration and hallmarking protect consumers from adulterated or under-karat jewellery.

Understanding the six-digit HUID

Every hallmarked article now carries a six-digit alphanumeric Hallmark Unique Identification (HUID) number. The HUID is assigned at the Assaying & Hallmarking Centre at the time of hallmarking and is unique to each article. It links the article to the centre that hallmarked it and supports full traceability.
