What is ISI Certification?

ISI certification stands for Indian Standards Institute issued by Bureau of Indian Standards Indian’ s national certifications body allow BIS licenses to manufacturers and importers for products covered under its voluntary or mandatory certifications scheme. BIS certifications assures product quality, consumer safety, and the trustworthiness of the BIS itself. Established by the Indian government under the BIS act, 1986, managed by the Ministry of Consumer Affairs, food and Public Distribution.

What is BIS Certification?

The Bureau of Indian Standards is a standards-keeping institute in the country. BIS certification is compulsory for certain products like electrical and electronic equipment; certification is voluntary for others. Even in those products where the certification is voluntary, it is believed that it provides additional advantages for both manufacturers and consumers.

For instance, from the point of view of a manufacturer, it ensures credibility for the product, adds value to the brand, and increases market reach. For a consumer, it means that whatever he is buying is quality, reliability, and safe use for the consumer.

Understanding the Difference Between BIS and ISI Marks

The Bureau of Indian Standards or BIS qualifies and certifies the product for quality management and consumers on stability and reliability and improves overall quality. An ISI mark, or Indian standard mark officially, is a standard emissary from the BIS that qualifies the ISI Mark in respect of what the product con-firms an Indian standard on.

The ISI Mark represents the sole basis on which a product conforms to quality retention for standards. For use of ISI Mark on any product manufactured under these applicable Indian standards, the Bureau conferred licenses to manufacturers for use of ISI Mark on any product manufactured, under these applicable Indian standards.

Advantage of ISI Certifications

Basic Requirements for ISI Certification

  • Indian standard (IS) compliance :  the product must meet the relevant Indian standard (IS) specifications as defined by BIS. This is the most essential requirement. You’ll need to identify the correct IS number for your product.
  • Testing facilities : to ensure your products meets standard you’ll require access to texting facilities, either through in house ability or accredited third-party laboratories.
  • A good quality control : The first step is building a credible assurance scheme is to put into place a good quality control system . This system covers inputs at all stages. From the procurement of raw materials, up to final inspection of output to ensure consistency and compliance with quality norms.
  • BIS Inspection :  Inspection by BIS officials for the quality control system and production processes at the manufacturing facility. They may also collect samples for independent testing.
  • Fees and charges : there are application fees, test charges, inspection fees and annual license fees for the ISI/BIS certification. The charges are below; they depend on the products and the certification scheme.

Indian Manufacturers: How to Get BIS ISI Certification

The BIS ISI Certification process for Indian manufacturers is a step by step process to validate that the products are in compliance with the relevant Indian Standards (IS) standards. This is the step by step procedure of the process;

Normal producer

To obtain BIS certification, the applicant must first prepare by meeting all requirements, including establishing in-house testing labs and preparing products according to Indian Standards, along with assembling all necessary documentation.

Following this preparation, a BIS official will inspect both the products and the manufacturing facility.

After the inspection, sealed samples of the products are sent to BIS-approved laboratories for testing.

If the products successfully meet all testing parameters, BIS approval is granted, and the certification for Indian Manufacturers is typically issued within 60 to 65 days from the application date.

Simplified producer

Firstly, the applicant has to forward a copy of previously tested samples that have been certified by the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) to Indian Standards specifications.

Secondly, the applicant has to send an application for online registration to BIS with the payment of BIS certification fees, along with other required documents.

During the course of the review of application documents, a BIS officer shall carry out inspections of the products as well as the factory/industry.

Upon inspection, sealed samples of the goods are sent to BIS-accredited laboratories for additional testing.

Finally, the BIS approves and issues a certificate within 35 to 40 days after the submission of an application based on the verification of the samples against the prescribed standards.

ISI mark application procedure.

1  Create a secure user account.

To proceed, applicants must create an online user account, complete registration, and continue with the application process.

2 Application submission process.

Manufacturers must next submit the completed application with all required documents, including product details, manufacturing processes, quality control measures, and test reports.

3 verifying documents

After application submission, the submitted documents are verified. The BIS reviews these documents to ensure compliance with regulatory standards.

4 product testing

After the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) verifies and vets the documents, the selected products sample and then sent to BIS-recognized laboratories for testing to ensure compliance with regulatory standards and legal requirements.

5 factory visit and inspection

After BIS-recognized labs test the product samples, BIS officials will conduct a factory inspection. This inspection assesses whether the manufacturing facilities comply with established quality control systems and production processes, ensuring production capabilities meet the required standards.

6 review of test results

After the laboratory generates product sample test reviews, BIS examines the findings. If the authorities are satisfied with the product quality and issue certification, the product is considered to have met all rigorous testing standards and necessary criteria.

7 grant of ISI Certifications

Following successful quality assurance testing in the labs, products proceed to the next phase. This involves the authorities granting the ISI certificate to products and manufacturing processes that meet all required standards and compliances. Upon receiving the ISI certificate, the manufacturer is authorized to display the ISI mark on their products.

8 fees for Certifications

If the Bureau approves the manufacturer’s infrastructure, the manufacturer must then pay the minimum marking fee and annual BIS license fee within seven days.
