Under CRS, a product is first tested against the relevant Indian Standard at a BIS-recognised laboratory. The manufacturer then applies to BIS, which, on approval, issues a unique registration number (the R-number). Only after this number is granted may the product carry the BIS Standard Mark and be lawfully placed in the Indian market. Who needs BIS CRS registration?

CRS registration is held by the manufacturer of the product, not the seller. Whether the goods are made in India or abroad, the manufacturer of each model and factory must hold a valid registration before the product enters the Indian market.
