Plastic Product Testing in India: Tests, Standards and Process Explained

abhishek By abhishek Updated October 31, 2026 12 min read
  • Plastic product testing checks whether your product is safe, strong, durable and fit for its use.
  • Which tests apply depends on the product: pipes, tanks, toys, food containers and carry bags all follow different rules.
  • Testing is done as per Indian Standards (IS), and sometimes ISO or ASTM methods, in a recognised lab.
  • Good raw material and a good test report make approvals, buyer trust and market checks much easier.
  • Most failures come from wrong material, bad documents or untested changes, and all of these can be avoided.
  • Rules change from time to time, so always check the latest standard or order before you start.

Introduction

Think of a new bucket from the market. It looks fine. But after one summer on the terrace it cracks, or when you pour hot water the handle bends. Nobody wants that. Plastic product testing Now imagine the same problem with a baby feeding bottle or a water pipe. Then it is not just a cracked bucket. It is a safety issue.

That is why plastic product testing exists. A lab takes your product, puts it through set tests, and tells you in numbers whether it passes. In this blog we will go through what it means, which standards apply, what tests are done, and how the process works. Everything in simple words.

What Is Plastic Product Testing?

Plastic product testing means checking a plastic item or its raw material against a standard. The lab measures things like strength, flexibility, heat resistance, chemical safety and size. Then it gives a test report.

Testing can be done at different stages:

  • Raw material testing: checking the resin or granules before production.
  • In-process testing: checking samples while the product is being made.
  • Finished product testing: checking the final item before it goes to the market.

Some products need testing because the law says so, for example under a BIS Quality Control Order. Others are tested because a buyer, brand or exporter asks for it. Even if it is not compulsory, testing protects your name.

Which Standards Apply to Plastic Products?

There is no single standard for all plastics. Each product type has its own. Here are some common examples.

AreaExample standards and rulesWhat it covers
General test methodsIS 13360 series, ISO and ASTM methodsHow to test tensile strength, impact, hardness, density and more
Plastic pipesDifferent IS standards for PVC, HDPE and PP pipesDimensions, pressure, material and marking
Water storage tanksIS standard for plastic storage tanksWall thickness, impact, material and stability
Food contact plasticsIS 10146 and related, along with FSSAI requirementsSafe materials and migration limits
ToysIS 9873 seriesMechanical, chemical and flammability safety
Carry bags and packagingPlastic Waste Management Rules by the Government of IndiaThickness, banned items and EPR duties

A simple example: a company makes HDPE pipes. It will test them against the relevant pipe standard for size, pressure and material. A company making plastic food boxes will care more about migration and food safety. Same word plastic, very different test plan.

Please note that standards get revised and Quality Control Orders get updated or extended. Always check the latest version on the BIS website or with your consultant before planning your tests.

Why Is Plastic Product Testing Important?

  • Safety: harmful chemicals and weak parts can hurt people, especially children.
  • Quality: tested products last longer and get fewer complaints Plastic testing laboratory.
  • Legal compliance: many products need BIS marking or other approvals before sale.
  • Buyer trust: big buyers and exporters usually ask for test reports first.
  • Lower waste and returns: you find the problem in the lab, not after 10,000 pieces are sold.
  • Better raw material decisions: test data shows if a cheaper material is really worth it.

What Tests Are Conducted on Plastic Products?

The exact list depends on the product and the standard. But most plastic tests fall into these groups.

Test groupWhat the lab checksIn simple words
Mechanical testsTensile strength, elongation, impact strength, flexural strength, hardnessWill it break, bend or crack under force?
Thermal testsVicat softening point, heat deflection temperature, melting behaviourWill it soften or lose shape in heat?
Flow testMelt flow index (MFI)How easily does the plastic flow when melted?
Physical testsDensity, wall thickness, dimensions, weightIs it the right size, weight and thickness?
Chemical testsChemical resistance, heavy metals, additivesIs it safe and does it stay stable with chemicals?
Food safety testsOverall migration, specific migration, odour and tasteWill anything move from the plastic into food?
Ageing testsUV and weathering, long-term heatWill it last in sun and weather?
FlammabilityBurning rate and self-extinguishing behaviourDoes it catch fire easily?
Marking and labellingMaterial code, batch details, standard markIs the product marked properly?

A lab will not run all of these on every product. A bucket may need impact and dimension checks. A toy will need mechanical, chemical and flammability tests. A water tank will lean towards thickness, impact and material tests.

Types of Plastic Products That Require Testing

Different plastic products are designed for different purposes. Therefore, the testing requirements also change according to their material, design and intended application. Plastic product testing helps manufacturers check whether their products meet the required quality, safety and performance standards.
Plastic product testing,

Some common plastic products that require testing include:

1. Plastic Pipes and Fittings

Plastic pipes are commonly used in water supply, drainage, irrigation and industrial applications. Testing may include hydrostatic pressure, dimensions, tensile strength, impact resistance and material quality checks.

2. Plastic Storage Tanks

Water storage tanks need sufficient strength to handle water pressure and regular usage. Testing can include wall thickness, impact resistance, material properties and dimensional checks.

3. Plastic Toys

Plastic toys require careful safety evaluation because children may put them in their mouths or handle them roughly. Relevant tests may cover mechanical and physical safety, chemical properties and flammability as required by the applicable standard.

4. Plastic Food Containers

Food containers must be suitable for their intended contact with food. Testing may include overall migration, specific migration, odour, taste and other applicable food-contact requirements.

5. Plastic Packaging Materials

Plastic packaging is used for food, cosmetics, medicines and household products. Testing requirements may include thickness, tensile strength, sealing performance, chemical properties and migration testing, depending on the application.

6. Plastic Bags and Films

Plastic bags and films are checked for thickness, tensile strength, elongation, tear resistance and other relevant properties. Manufacturers must also consider applicable Plastic Waste Management Rules and EPR requirements.
Plastic testing standards

Factors That Affect Plastic Product Quality

The quality of a plastic product depends on several factors, from raw material selection to the final manufacturing process. Even a small change in material composition or production conditions can affect the test results.

Important factors include:

  • Raw material quality: The grade and properties of plastic resin directly affect product performance.
  • Manufacturing temperature: Incorrect processing temperatures can create weak areas or defects.
  • Material composition: Additives, fillers, colour masterbatch and recycled content may change the physical and chemical properties.
  • Product design: Incorrect dimensions or uneven wall thickness can reduce strength and durability.
  • Cooling process: Improper cooling may cause shrinkage, warping or dimensional variations.
  • Storage conditions: Heat, moisture and sunlight can affect certain plastic materials over time.

Manufacturers should monitor these factors during production and conduct regular quality checks to maintain consistent product performance.

Difference Between Plastic Material Testing and Plastic Product Testing

Plastic material testing and plastic product testing are related, but they are not exactly the same. Material testing focuses on the properties of the raw plastic, while product testing checks the performance of the finished item.Plastic material testing

Plastic Material TestingPlastic Product Testing
Checks raw plastic resin or granulesChecks the finished plastic item
Measures melt flow index and densityMeasures dimensions, strength and performance
Helps select suitable raw materialsHelps verify product quality
Usually conducted before or during productionUsually conducted during or after manufacturing
Evaluates material characteristicsEvaluates suitability for intended use

Both types of testing are important. A good-quality raw material does not automatically guarantee that the finished product will meet every applicable requirement.

How to Choose the Right Plastic Testing Laboratory

Selecting the correct laboratory is an important step in the plastic testing process. A laboratory may offer several testing services, but its accreditation scope and available test methods must match your actual requirements.

Before selecting a laboratory, consider these points:

  1. Check accreditation: Verify whether the laboratory has valid NABL accreditation for the required tests.
  2. Confirm testing scope: Make sure the exact product and test methods are covered within its scope.
  3. Verify applicable standards: Confirm that the laboratory follows the correct and latest version of the relevant Indian Standard.
  4. Ask about sample requirements: Understand the sample quantity, preparation and packaging instructions.
  5. Check report details: The final report should clearly identify the sample, test methods, results and applicable acceptance criteria.
  6. Understand the timeline: Ask about testing duration and possible retesting requirements.

Choosing a suitable laboratory helps manufacturers avoid unnecessary delays and ensures that the test report meets the intended purpose.

Two Kinds of Testing: Factory Lab and Recognised Lab

People often mix these two, so let us make it clear.

In-house factory lab: This is the small lab inside your plant. It is used for daily checks like weight, size and quick strength tests. It helps you catch problems early. But for many approvals, in-house results alone are not enough.

Recognised or accredited lab: This is an independent lab, usually with NABL accreditation, and for BIS work, a BIS recognised lab. Its report is accepted for certification, buyer approval and legal use.

A good practice is to use both. Your factory lab keeps day-to-day quality in check, and the outside lab gives the official proof.

Step-by-Step Process for Plastic Product Testing

  1. Identify your product and its rules. Find out which IS standard, order or buyer requirement applies.
  2. Decide the tests needed. List the clauses of the standard that your product must meet.
  3. Choose the right lab. Check the lab scope covers your product and test methods. Ask for the accreditation certificate.
  4. Prepare your samples. Use samples from regular production, not a special batch. Send the quantity the lab asks for.
  5. Fill the request form. Give product name, grade, material, model and the standard.
  6. Lab runs the tests. Samples are conditioned first, then tested as per the method.
  7. Review the draft results. If something fails, find the cause with your team.
  8. Fix and retest if needed. Change the material, design or process, then send fresh samples.
  9. Collect the final report. Keep it safe. You will need it for certification, buyers and market checks.

Documents Usually Required

Document needs change from lab to lab, but these are common.

Company documents

  • Company name, address and contact person
  • GST registration or business proof
  • Authorisation letter if a consultant is submitting samples

Product documents

  • Product name, model, size and intended use
  • Raw material name, grade and supplier details
  • Drawings or specification sheet, where available
  • Colour masterbatch and additive details, especially for food contact items

Testing records

  • Earlier test reports, if any
  • Raw material test certificates from the supplier
  • Internal quality check records

How Long Does Plastic Product Testing Take?

There is no fixed time. A simple dimension and weight check can finish quickly. Long tests like UV ageing, heat ageing or food migration take much more. Lab workload also matters. Some labs are busy during certain seasons.

A smart way is to ask the lab for a timeline before you send samples, and keep some buffer for a retest. If you are working towards a launch date, start testing early.

What Decides the Cost?

We are not giving fixed figures here because costs differ a lot. These are the main factors.

  • Number and type of tests
  • Product type and size
  • Number of samples
  • Special tests like food migration or ageing
  • Lab and its accreditation scope
  • Urgent timelines
  • Retests after a failure

Always ask the lab for a written breakup. Cheaper is not always better. A report from a lab that is not accepted by your buyer or authority is just wasted money.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

  • Sending a special sample. Samples must match what you really sell.
  • Choosing the wrong standard. Always confirm which standard applies to your exact product.
  • Ignoring raw material grade. Recycled or mixed material can change the results badly.
  • Using a lab with the wrong scope. Check that your test is on their accredited list.
  • Skipping marking and labelling. Many products fail only on this.
  • Changing material after testing. A new grade or supplier may need a fresh test.
  • Poor record keeping. Lost reports mean repeating the tests.
  • Starting too late. Retests and delays can push your launch date.

Who Needs Plastic Product Testing?

  • Manufacturers: to prove quality and meet compulsory standards.
  • Importers: to make sure what comes from abroad meets Indian rules.
  • Private label brands: your name is on the product, so you carry the risk.
  • Overseas manufacturers: if you want to sell into India, your product still has to meet local requirements.
  • Exporters: buyers abroad often ask for specific tests before they place orders.
  • Packaging and carry bag units: to stay inside the Plastic Waste Management Rules.

Why Choose Diligence Certifications for Plastic Product Testing Certification?

Testing is one part. The paperwork, choosing the correct standard, and coordinating with labs is where most people get stuck. That is where a consultant helps.
NABL accredited plastic testing laboratory

At Diligence Certifications, the team helps businesses understand which rules apply to their plastic products and prepare for the process properly. You can read more on our services page. Here is how we usually help:

  • Understanding which standard or order applies to your product
  • Preparing a clear list of documents and tests
  • Guiding you on sample preparation

  • Supporting you with related approvals and compliance

We do not promise approvals, because approvals depend on your product and the authority. What we can do is make the process clear and organised, so you do not waste time and money.

Conclusion

Plastic product testing is not just a formality. It tells you if your product is safe, strong and ready for the market. The correct standard, a proper lab, good samples and clean records make the whole journey smooth Plastic testing services.

If you are planning to launch or import a plastic product, start with the standard, make a test plan, and keep your documents ready. A little effort early saves a lot of trouble later. And if you feel stuck anywhere, get expert guidance before you send samples.
