Different Components of a BIS Hallmark
There are five key marks in a regular BIS Hallmark that ensure authenticity, purity and traceability.
1. BIS Logo or mark

2. Purity Rate
There are two ways to observe purity:
Karats (KT) – usually 22KT, 18KT, etc.
Fineness number – E.g., 22KT is 916 (i.e., 91.6% pure gold).
Jewellery rarely uses 24KT gold because of its soft characteristics, and so some alloy metals are added to create a stronger product while ensuring that purity requirements are still met.
3. Assaying and Hallmarking Centre’s Identification mark
Every hallmarked product is required to display the identification number of the BIS recognised hallmarking centre that conducted the testing on that item. This represents a traceability marking if there is any issue with the product after it has been sold.
4. Jeweller’s Identification mark

New System of BIS Hallmarking

Who is Not Eligible for Hallmark Registration in India?
- Specific conditions stated by the BIS provide that an applicant shall not be eligible for a hallmark registration.
- If a jeweller has their registration cancelled under clause 7(1)(e) of the BIS (Hallmarking) Regulations, 2018, it will be required of them to have a cooling period of one year before being eligible to petition for registration again.
- If a jeweller is convicted of an offense under the BIS Act, they will be ineligible to apply for a registration for only one year from the date of conviction.
