What will happen if I import goods without CRS certification?

Your products can be detained at customs, and fines under the BIS Act, 2016 could be imposed.

Is it possible for a foreign brand to apply for CRS certification?

Yes, provided they have an Authorized Indian Representative (AIR) to apply on their behalf.

How much time does BIS CRS certification take?

Generally 4–6 weeks, subject to testing and document preparedness.

Is product testing compulsory in the case of CRS?

Yes. Testing at a BIS-approved laboratory is obligatory in the case of every product model and variation

How long is the validity of a BIS CRS Certificate?

The BIS CRS Certificate is valid for 2 years and can be renewed if there are no alterations in product design or manufacturing site.

Can a single BIS CRS license be used for several product models?

Yes, other similar models with slight differences (e.g., color or branding) can be covered under a single certificate as series models, as long as they undergo a series model test plan certified by BIS.

Must each location of manufacturing have separate certification?

Yes. Certification is issued by BIS per product, per location. If different locations produce the same product, then each must be separately certified.

Can the CRS mark be printed on the product prior to certification being issued?

No. You can only put the CRS mark and registration number on your product once the official certificate has been issued by BIS. Pre-marking is prohibited and punishable.

Can I transfer my BIS CRS certificate to another importer or distributor?

No. The certificate is not transferable. If another company wishes to sell the product under their label, they would need to apply individually, even for the same product.

Who needs to renew the CRS Certificate—importer or manufacturer?

The manufacturer (or AIR for overseas brands) needs to renew the CRS certificate prior to expiry. If the certificate expires, the product is rendered non-compliant to be sold in India.
