What is BIS CRS Certification?

BIS CRS (Compulsory Registration Scheme) certification is a product registration scheme specifically designed for electronic and IT products. Unlike ISI certification, CRS doesn’t require factory inspection but mandates compliance through testing in BIS-recognized labs and registration with the BIS portal.

Products under this scheme must carry the CRS mark on packaging and product labels, indicating that they conform to the Indian Standard (IS) set by BIS.

Reasons For The BIS CRS Certification Being Mandatory For Electronic Products

  • Consumer Safety
Electronic products can cause electric shocks; they can initiate fires or even get unsafe due to radiation. Thus, BIS CRS ensures that such products reach consumers after they would have met the basic safety requirements.
  • Quality Assurance
CRS mark ensures that the product under certification adheres to Indian Standards (IS), guaranteeing that it is serviceable, energy-efficient, and reliable.
  • Regulatory Issues
As per government notification, CRS certification becomes mandatorily required for entry into India: in the case of importation, fabrication, or selling of the listed electronic products.
  • Market Access
Without BIS CRS, a company cannot legally sell some of these electronic products in India. It serves as a big wall keeping in the infringement of standards through imports.
  • Protects Domestic Industry
It protects the domestic industry by making sure foreign manufacturers are also held to Indian standards of safety and quality.
  • Acts Against Counterfeit Products
Such mandatory certification practically reduces the availability of counterfeit, substandard electronic goods, thus protecting consumers and genuine producers.
