Yes, if you’re importing products that fall under the mandatory BIS ISI product list, those products must be ISI certified. However, the manufacturer must apply for the certification, and the importer can act as an Authorized Indian Representative (AIR) if the manufacturer is foreign.

Can a single ISI license cover multiple manufacturing locations?

The first ISI Certification is for 1 year and may be renewed for up to 5 years, depending upon the history of compliance and payment of renewal fees on the license.

Is the testing of the product obligatory for all ISI certification requests?

Yes. All products have to be tested in BIS-recognized labs according to the concerned Indian Standard (IS) before certification. Factory inspection is also necessary for some categories.

Can I affix the ISI mark if my product complies with Indian Standards without obtaining certification?

By no means. Placement of the ISI mark without a valid license by BIS is illegal and is punishable under the BIS Act, 2016. It can result in penalties, prosecution, and seizure of the product.

What is the difference between voluntary and mandatory ISI Certification?

Voluntary certification can also be obtained by those manufacturers who desire to highlight quality, even if it's not compulsorily required. But compulsory ISI certification is made mandatory through Quality Control Orders (QCOs) released by ministries like the Ministry of Commerce, Ministry of Steel, or Ministry of Consumer Affairs.

How do I find the proper Indian Standard (IS code) for my product?

You may obtain the relevant IS code from the BIS official website or seek the advice of professionals at Diligence Certification, who will examine your product and ascertain the appropriate Indian Standard.

Are ISI Certifications mandatory for all electrical appliances?

Not everything, but most household electrical goods like water heaters, electric irons, immersion rods, switches, cables, and circuit breakers do need ISI Certification. In the case of other electronics like laptops, mobiles, etc., CRS Certification under BIS comes into force.
